Mamma.com's slogan is the Mother of all search engines, well I dont know about this claim but as a new search engine starting out (as far as I am aware) it looks pretty good. To me it feels like a slightly cut down version of Altavista.
I think this because it has the same type of search style, in the way that it lets you search for MP3s images and video's etc all seperately as independant searches, I definately like this feature. mamma.com obviously thought it was worth while putting in as well.
I thought Google was good at not returning any garbage but this seems to be very good, if you can get very close with your description in your search, you are likely not to get many results out of this one. That can be a good thing as your results will be stream lined. Again though like google if your not entirely sure what you want and you really wanted to get a sesrch engine to pile a load of pages at you so you could browse through them then mamma.com is not the one.
This minimalist search thing seems to be the way forward though as many people do know what they are looking for now, the web has been round for quite a while and most people what to save the phone costs and get what they want quickly.
As for content mamma.com does have a few bits to offer, no news or content from its own team but it has shopping links and things like help with mortgages etc. It also seems to be pretty obsessed with stock quotes as you can link to them and also it is one of the main search areas along with Mps videa and images. I found this very strange indeed. I don't think that stock quotes were that widely used that it could be its own media on the net.
Mamma.com only has the one advert at the bottom of the screen as well so thats not too obtrusive. Mamma searches 10 of the top search engines, so its not its own search engine but a meta search engine. I'm not sure which ones it uses but it only takes the best results from each and runs it through its own filter.
