I have been working on our extensive and mysterious family tree for some time. The family tree has more branches than one woman can handle! MyFamily.com has lessened the load a bit and at the same time made it possible and easy to get more information and come in contact with family members I didn't even know I had!
Some I knew I had but hadn't been in touch with them for a long time. (Telling you how long will just make me feel old so I won't go there....)
One feature I really appreciate is being able to have as many family sites as you feel necessary. I have one site for my mother's side of the family and another for another branch of the family. I have another site for my own immediate family as well as a separate one for my husband's family. Family members who participate are able to join whichever family sites they are interested in.
If you do plan on developing more than one family site or joining more than one family site it is a very good idea to consolidate all of you log ins under one username and one password. Remembering one password is bad enough and they are assigned automatically until you go in and change it. This can be a big headache until you get it all under control so you only need one username and password to access all of your family sites.
When you first log in at MyFamily.com you will be presented with your own home page. All of your sites are listed on this page and are easily viewed. New items that have been posted and/or page updates are also displayed accordingly. (You can also opt to be notified by email if someone posts news, photos, etc on a family site you belong to or if the page is updated.)
From the home page you can subscribe to newsletters you may be interested in. There are links for MyFamily Money,MyFamily Health,Gift Center and Communities. Message boards for sharing research tips or requests for information are also available.
MyFamily.com hosts a photo contest every now and then. Right now it is a Baby Photo contest with a prize of $5000.
Once you access your family site you have a variety of activities and options to choose from.
CALENDAR:
With the calendar feature you'll never miss a birthday, anniversary or important event in your family. They are listed here for you with the option to send a gift or a Hallmark e-card.
PHOTOS:
Uploading photos to your family site album is a snap. It's really quick and easy to do. Members of your family site can also add their own photos. The new Share-a-Photo feature allows you to email any photo to anyone.
NEWS:
This is the place to keep family members up to date on what is happening in your own neck of the woods. Wether you are taking a trip and want to make connections with other family members or if you are planning a family reunion MyFamily.com makes it a much simpler task.
MEMBERS:
Under the members heading you can see who is a member of your family site and when other family members have visited the site. (Membership is by invitation only from the site administrator.).
CHAT:
Schedule and announce a family chat in a real-time chat room.
ONLINE FAMILY TREES:
This is an awesome feature offered by MyFamily.com. Here you can upload a gedcom file to create a family tree easily viewed by all members of your family. It's a great way to get more information since all family members can plainly see what is missing.
HISTORY:
The history option allows you to share all of those favorite family stories. Like the time the cousins threw the M-80 in the potato salad at the Fourth of July picnic. Or the time Aunt Marie was hypnotized and cracked a raw egg over her own head.... Every family has their own stories to share.
FILE CABINET:
You can store family files and documents here. An online hard drive for family file storage. Safe and Secure.
REVIEWS:
Epinions members probably won't use this feature. I know I don't. If any of my family members want to know what I think of a movie or book they will just have to come on over to epinions and find out.
RECIPES:
Create an online recipe book, share Great Grandma's recipe for Chicken & Dumplings to Feed 125 people or just pass on quick time saving recipes for those bedraggled working mothers in your family.
POLLS:
Yes, you can even create a poll and get your family members views. This is where they can put their two cents in without consequences. Ha.
I have been a member of MyFamily.com for well over a year and have thoroughly enjoyed gaining new insight into my family and meet up once again with cousins and long lost relatives who have responded to postings seeking information.
MyFamily.com is affiliated with sister sites Ancestry.com,Rootsweb.com and FamilyHistory.com. I haven't used Rootsweb.com but I am very familiar with the other two. But that is another review...
