Pros: Powerful engine, smooth transmission, interior materials, build quality, 4 year WARRANTY! Cons: Soft suspension, back seat is cramped The Bottom Line: A cute, sexy, fast car. Well priced, well built, a 4 year warranty, and German engineered. What's not to like?
The VW Golf has been a classic ever since it was introduced. A car with a place in history. Much like the VW Beetle, the Ford Mustang, the first AUDI Quattro or the Chrysler minivan. Over the years VW never dropped the GTI car. The engines changed, the...

Pros: Quick Engine, Stable, Safe, Affordable, Ample Aftermarket Vendors Cons: Electronics, Plastic, VW Customer Service The Bottom Line: Fun to drive that is very safe and reasonably priced. I am still undecided about the VW Customer Service. I will recommend it, for now.
This review will focus on the base 2002 GTI 1.8T with a 5-spd manual transmission and 17" wheels. I have owned a GTI for almost 3 months and have 4000 miles on the odometer. I hope you find this information useful.
VW has taken the 2932-pound...

Pros: 337 limited edition package! Cons: MPG could be better, interior rattles The Bottom Line: This is one of the best bang for your bucks sport compact cars available and has a lot more potential.
I bought this car used five years after falling in love with it when it came out. The car had 44,000 miles on it and had been stored over the winters it had spent in Minnesota. I did find that it had been in an accident with the first owner when it was ...

Pros: engine, torque, interior styling, braking Cons: cup holder, several recalls have been issued, interior rattles The Bottom Line: This car packs a lot of features and technology for the price it costs.
I've been driving my 2002 1.8T 5-speed GTI now for about two years, and have about 33,000 miles on it. Here are my impressions of the car so far: Engine: The 1.8 Turbo is a fun fun fun engine. The main reason I bought this car is because of the ...

Pros: Quick, nimble, fantastic interior and superbly made! Cons: Little car looks with big car price. The Bottom Line: If you're good about doing your maintenance and want a real sleeper that promises to please, the GTI can't be beat!
... and perhaps the most disconcerting thing about the GTI is the fact that it looks (and, in fact, is based on) an otherwise garden-variety Golf. When I picked up my shiny new GTI and brought it work, everyone cocked an eyebrow curiously when they saw...

Pros: fun to drive, nice peppy engine, tons of standard features Cons: small rear, only 2 door version available The Bottom Line: It provides excellent speed and acceleration that rivals more expensive cars. However, there are some problems with the craftsmanship. Be glad that the warranty works.
I bought my new 2002 VW GTI 1.8T a few weeks ago. Boy was I excited. After my '98 Civic died on me (yup, a 4 year old Honda breaking down on me. I still can't figure it out) I thought I'd try the fine German engineering I've been hearing so much ...

Pros: Fantastic looks, BBS rims, Recaro buckets, Michelin Pilot sports, TAUT TIGHT RIDE! Cons: Small than what I'm used to, otherwise NONE The Bottom Line: If you could get a 337, you'd understand why it's so great. If you who didn't/can't get one, just read this review to understand what you're missing.
I want you all to know first off that I am not writing a review of an everyday normal VW GTI. I am writing one for the special edition GTI 337 Edition, of which only 1500 will be imported to the U.S.
Some pictures of this special car can be...

Pros: Trashes other little coupes and your wallet after the warranty ends. Cons: The 17" Wheels don't like potholes. The Bottom Line: If you are having a mid-life sports car crisis then this is NOT your car.
After less than 35K miles and one month post warranty, the transmission has died. $4800 in repair costs on a car valued at around 10K doesn't seem realistic. Buyer ...

Pros: Sporty, practical, quick, responsive, fuel-efficient, and most importantly, fun! Cons: Awkward placement of in-dash amenities, slight turbo lag in lower RPM's. The Bottom Line: The GTI's very practical, and it does have the punch when you need it. Be aware of VW service, and always perform routine maintenances to insure your investment.
I'll start by giving some basic information and history about the GTI and then dwell into the cars I looked at on the market and how/why I came out with the GTI, and finally, I'll discuss some initial problems I had after purchasing the car.

Pros: Small, great handling, lots of power Cons: has turbo lag The Bottom Line: This is a great car. It would make a great starter car for a high school or college student.
I have always been skeptical of Hatchbacks. I mean what cool guy do you know riding down the street in one where the girls turn there head and go wow. But this changed everything for me. I saw the Golf IV and it was the most beautiful hatchback that I...

Pros: Excellent acceleration.
SMOOTH engine.
Very solid feel.
Fun car you want to drive it ALOT! Cons: Possible shoddy dealer service.
Minor reliability issues.
Paint soft and swirles up easily.
The Bottom Line: Best value for performance out there..full stop! Is quick enough to embarrass much more expensive cars. Is a perfect mix of comfort and performance...and this is a freaking hatchback!
I've had two other GTI's before this one...an 87 GTI and a 98 VR6 GTI. This new engine with the 6 speed transmission is wonderful.
I bought the car not because it's very quick..but rather because it's so relaxed. Far more so than the 1.8T...

Pros: fast, comfortable, handles like a dream Cons: electronic problems, interior problems, bogus warranty
I simply adored my 2001 GTI GLS 1.8T hatchback, until bizarre electronic problems kept occurring-- indicators went on the fritz, headlights burnt out early, the dashboard lights burning out, the locks unlocking themselves and other problems like the windows falling off the track (for no reason!) and the weather strips from the interior simply fell off.
And yes, this is all in the first 3 years.
I lost my faith in Volkswagen when my car out and out died last week. After a week in the shop, they've finally told me that I had a faulty electronic control module. Sure, so a new battery ($200), diagnostic tests ($148--for a week!), and now a $486 module--and that's before labor.
Needless to say, I'm frustrated beyond belief with what I initially thought was going to be a fun, stylish and *reliable* car.
I also recommended Volkswagen to my mom, who bought a 01 Beetle, and she has also had repeat electrical problems since day one.
If you're sold on a VW, GET AN EXTENDED WARRANTY!

Pros: High performance, sporty and functional, especially for a small car. Cons: Nuisances that reflect poor design; interior noise too loud
Purchased new from dealer and now have 25K miles. Premium gas slightly improves engine response, but for the cost difference, I typically use regular gas. The engine purrs and the car accelerates nicely. Highway mileage around 34, city mileage 26.
Heated leather seats are wonderful, even in NC! The Monsoon sound system is awesome, the ride is comfortable on long distances, and the 5-speed transmission shifts smoothly with a firm sports-car feel. The 17" tires provide superlative traction and look great!
Hardware quality has been a problem, particularly the window mechanisms which have been replaced several times (all under warranty). There is a continuous noise from underneath the dash that never seems to resolve. With both front windows rolled down, the noise in the car is almost unbearable at speeds greater than 35MPH. Wind noise is present with the windows up but does not interfere with conversation. The beverage holder in front blocks efficient use of the radio.
